How to incorporate Rock Boulders in Landscape Design

Natural rock adds both stability and natural beauty to any garden design. In Victoria, we have access to unique landscaping rocks like honey granite, iceberg granite, mudstone, and basalt boulders, each bringing its own character to outdoor spaces.

In our previous projects, we have used natural rock as both a focal point and as a structural element, incorporating boulders into retaining walls to address level changes. This approach is cost-effective and enhances the visual appeal of the garden. Rock retaining walls are particularly useful for sloped front yards or properties with ground-level differences between neighbours’ properties. They offer excellent soil stabilisation, and our skilled landscapers carefully place each rock to ensure stability and a natural, seamless look. A thoughtfully arranged mix of rocks, combined with complementary greenery, brings a balanced and attractive finish to any landscape.

Here are examples from our past projects that effectively used natural rocks.

Warranwood Project

At this Warranwood property, we addressed a challenging 5-metre front yard slope by combining a retaining wall with strategic rock placements. The design incorporates a path that winds through the landscape, enhancing both accessibility and visual appeal. Granite boulders were carefully chosen to stabilise the soil, while native plants were added to achieve a cohesive and natural look.

Doncaster East Project

This project focused on revitalising the walk-through path, improving driveway conditions, and managing overgrown vegetation. With a 6-metre drop in the front yard, we carefully worked out the level change and rock placement. We designed the space to incorporate a retaining wall and strategically placed boulders to retain the slope, with a path travelling through the landscape.

Balwyn North

In our Balwyn North project, basalt rocks were chosen to resolve the level difference between the neighbouring property and the garden area.

Here are some examples of how natural rock can be used as a feature in your garden, combined with greenery to create a distinct and appealing landscape.
